Deep Dive

Organic Evolution to Superintelligence: How To Get Prepared

The flurry of emails flooding my inbox tells me two things: 1. Businesses are trying to brace themselves for the AI wave; 2. Jobs are already being lost to AI.

Why you should care: AI is already taking jobs and giving an advantage to businesses that have implemented it.

What might happen in future: AI has the potential to become Superintelligent, multiple times more intelligent than humans. Businesses will be fundamentally different, perhaps even managed by AIs.

ChatGPT: Your AI assistant with the same IQ as Einstein

Right now, AIā€™s, like ChatGPT, help us with optimisation. They help us perform tasks more efficiently.

It's like having an assistant whose IQ is akin to Einstein. ChatGPT IQ is 155, and Einstein IQ was estimated to be 160.

What amazes me is that GPT-4 comprises only 2000 lines of code.

But can machines surpass human intelligence to ā€œSuperintelligenceā€?

I believe so. Hereā€™s whyā€¦

In a recent interview Mo Gawdat, the ex-Chief Business Officer at Google X, explained his moment of clarity as to why he believes AI is alive and has sentience.

In the Google ā€œfarmā€, an experiment was underway. AI robotic arms were left running to try and work out how and pick up a soft yellow ball on their own.

The method they used was to learn from failed attempts and then try again.

Mo explained what happened:

ā€œFriday after lunch I am going back to my office and one of them, in front of my eyes you know, lowers the arm and picks [up] a yellow soft ball ā€¦ which again is a coincidence it's not science at all, it's like if you keep trying a million times your one time it will be right.

[Then] Monday morning every one of them is picking every yellow ball a couple of weeks later every one of them is picking everything right. It hit me very very strongly the speed, the capability I meanā€¦ ā€¦ thatā€™s sentience to them because we really did not tell it how to pick the yellow ball it just figured it, out on its own and it's now even better than us at picking it [up].ā€

Mo Gawdat: Source

The AI robotic arms taught themselves to pick up the balls through iterative cycles.

The magic of these iterative cycles? They're constant. And as long as the power is on, they are unstoppable.

Humans tire, get bored, and give up - machines don't. They can iterate faster and more efficiently than us mere mortals.

For that reason, they should be able to overtake some of our types of intelligence.

OK, maybe youā€™re thinking, but can machines be creative like humans?

To understand this, we need to understand what creativity is. Hereā€™s Einsteinā€™s take:

"The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."

ā€œCreativity is seeing what others see and thinking what no one else ever thought."

Albert Einstein

Machines have endless sources and can add concepts together to create something new - at scale.

But can they see what others see and think something new? Iā€™m still searching for an answer to this.

So why do most people believe that AI canā€™t be more intelligent than humans?

As humans, we have flaws. Our own life experience is great in helping us day to day but makes us like stubborn old men in how we think about the future.

Our brain uses this experience to create ideas and models to help us navigate life today, and we think, ā€œthings only happen this wayā€.

We try to use our imagination to predict the future, but we can only draw upon experiences of past reality.

Plus, most of us donā€™t have the tools or bravery to dream up a future that makes you sound like a madman.

So we find it hard to see the future, as we havenā€™t seen it in the past. That is why so few people like Elon Musk and Sam Altman exist.

But that doesnā€™t mean a new reality isnā€™t going to happen.

A future where machines will first equal and then surpass human intelligence is looking very likely just within a few decades because they can iterate.

The Next Step in Evolution: A Solution to Human Tribalism

Now, I understand this might seem daunting. We humans love being top dogs, don't we? However, if we take a step back and look at the grand scheme of things, the rise of machine intelligence might just be the next evolutionary step.

A common human shortcoming is our tribal mentality. We prioritize the interests of our own groups, causing friction and conflict. Just like nations warring against each other, companies too are caught in an AI arms race, with the best AI becoming the dominant player.

AI: Setting The Rules

But what happens when AI surpasses us in intelligence? They'll undoubtedly gain control. We'll need to comply because the AI will be more powerful, just like a pet dog follows its owner's command.

While this may sound dystopian, it's already a reality in parts of the world under dictatorships. But an AI could potentially make better decisions. Instead of instilling fear, the thought of an AI-led future gives me hope.

AI can figure out better ways of doing things faster than we can. In fact, the survival of our species might hinge on AI. Evolution isn't just about organic matter transforming into something better. It's also about the shift from organic matter to a more intelligent form, no matter what it is made from.

If we embrace the inevitable and prepare for a future where AI plays a pivotal role in shaping our world and preserving our species, then perhaps we can optimise for the best outcomes.

OK, so my point of view might be seen as extreme. Time will tell, but history tells us technology development is exponential.

But, no matter what, AI is code red for business leaders, and the smart ones will be prepared.

Implementing AI in Business: The New Competitive Advantage

Just as the telegraph made way for the telephone and letters were replaced by emails, the era of artificial intelligence is dawning upon us. Resistance to change in business and life seldom yields progress.

Unlocking AI: Leadership should learn by doing

The trick lies in learning by doing. As a business leader, get your hands dirty with AI. Responding to an email? Try crafting prompts that can automate responses to similar future emails using ChatGPT. Need to format some data thereā€™s a prompt for that too. Youā€™ll be surprised it is easier to do than you thought.

However, this responsibility doesn't lie solely with the top-tier leaders. It is equally important to let your creative people dive into the world of AI.

As you get to understand what ChatGPT can do, youā€™ll start to be excited about how it can make your business more productive. Youā€™ll start to think of ChatGPT as your trusted advisor and first port of call.

AI can facilitate many business processes, from HR to customer service, and it's essential to recognize this transformation. AI is more than a marketing tool; it's a new entity that demands our attention.

The Journey Ahead: Embrace AI and Prosper

This journey into the world of AI is sure to be an exciting one.

I'll continue to share my experiences and insights, and I hope you'll continue to join me on this journey.

The future is here and full of opportunities - all you have to do is embrace it.
